OUR STORY
The story of Cabinette only begins in 2025, but the story of founders Carla & Jason Morano goes back a bit further. Learn about how their individual and collective journeys took them, their cats, Bowie & Slash, and their dog, Mazzy, from the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, California to the rolling hills of Western Massachusetts where they quickly discovered getting away by staying home could be a way of life.

Toronto & Toledo
The 90's
The decade that brought us the internet, cell phones, Grunge and Britpop saw Carla & Jason making their way through their 20's in separate cities with similar climates. While Carla studied design in Toronto, Ontario, Jason took his time on a masters in history in Toledo, Ohio, neither having any idea they would one day meet in, of all places, Los Angeles, California.

El Segundo
2007
In the Summer of 2007, Carla & Jason first met after starting jobs a few weeks apart at a new company in El Segundo, California. Finding themselves seated one cubicle away from each other, they led teams tasked with designing and promoting innovative products that would appeal to a global audience. Two weeks after their first date, they had the keys to each other's... apartments.

The OC
2015
Married in 2009, Carla & Jason used the considerable time spent navigating LA's freeways to envision a future beyond their endless city. A first attempt at slowing down took them to suburban Orange County where Carla was determined to adapt their living space to provide the solace they desired. She began layering in sensory inputs - colors, textures, images - soothing and comforting them while offsetting career demands that led to burnout. Without even realizing it, Carla was already designing for a new life they had yet to start truly living.

Escape to Wales
2018
Carla & Jason share a mutual obsession with British & Irish history and their respective countrysides. Not long after discovering UK real estate show Escape to the Country, they found themselves on a Welsh farm filming an episode for the BBC. Experiencing the natural beauty, slower rural pace, and appreciation for handmade objects created by traditional methods like weaving, cyanotype, and pottery, they returned to California with a 5-year plan to be living and working in Wales, where sheep outnumber humans 3 to 1, by April 2023.

The Berkshires
2023
After more than 300 days on lockdown, the plan to move overseas required a post-pandemic reset that pointed towards a New England road trip in the Fall of 2022. When you know, you know. It took less than 36 hours in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts to set a new plan into motion. On March 20, 2023, Carla, Jason, Bowie, Slash, and Mazzy pulled into the driveway of their "new" home built in 1771 by a soon-to-be Captain in American Revolutionary Army and situated in a tiny village on the banks of the Housatonic River.
The slow life was finally about to begin.

Cabinette
2025
Was it all worth it? Absolutely. Tense freeway drives became pleasant rural journeys. Strip malls became swap meets. Running out for milk became a visit to the local dairy. Life slowed down. Inner changes also inspired a new way forward. Combining their decades of design and brand building experience, Carla & Jason set out to create handmade objects that offer a sense of presence and comfort.
There's a reason people used to sit around a fire and weave, sew, carve, or just think. The simplest things can offer profound joy and our nervous systems never stopped needing this. We just forgot how much it matters, and that faster and easier isn't always better. Cabinette invites you to slow down, even if only for a little while each day, and embrace the quiet stillness of just being rather than always doing. Join us in honoring the old ways that sustain us, inspire us, and make us all indelibly human.
